Quilts for the Kim's

Hi there everyone! I know it's been a long time but I've noticed there's been a few hits here and there on this blog so I thought I'd write up a little update.

I have not heard from Patricia since July; she's had a broken computer so I don't know if she's heard anything from the Kim's. I have not heard anything either. All I know is that the quilts were sent out sometime in June (early July?) by Patricia...I wish I knew more...sorry I don't.

Everyone should have also received a goodie bag from me...I sent the "pink gals" directly to you ladies and Patricia got the other to mail out to the yellow gals". Again, I haven't heard from Patricia so I don't know if those got mailed out or not.

Sabine's Finished Quilt!!

Sabine's quilt is all finished and it's just beautiful! A big thanks goes out to the gals who quilted it and to Meghan for binding it. The picture is borrowed from Meghan!

If you created a square for either quilts we will be contacting you via email to get your mailing address. Meghan is creating keepsake charms from the leftover scraps of backing and binding fabric. They're really adorable!

Quilting Bee

I just received an email from Meghan saying they're holding a quilting bee at the shop to quilt the quilts!! That's so exciting!! I wanted to post the details here just in case someone out there might be in her area and want to stop by and help! Meghan writes:

On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, we will be working on an extra special project - The Quilts for the Kim's. We will be putting all of your orders on hold while we work on quilting the first of these two very special quilts. We have decided to do an informal bee, and you are all invited! If you happen to be in the area (we will be at the Sauder's store), and have any desire to help with this amazing project, you are welcome, invited, and encouraged to drop in to add a few stitches of your own to this wonderful collaborative labor of love. We hope to get started around 10 am, and we will quilt until it is finished. Because it is a small quilt, we don't expect it to take too long to complete - an afternoon, maybe.

We want to thank you in advance for your patience and for supporting our decision to make this project our priority for the day. We believe that it is really something special

Here it is.............finally! Penelope's quilt. I had a terrible time getting a decent picture, and these really don't do it justice. Hopefully we'll get some better pictures when then are finished.

The border print didn't show up well, but it's light yellow, with brighter yellow flowers.

Yellow Quilt

Hi Ladies! I'm sorry I haven't posted sooner, things here have been a little crazy. I just wanted to update you all and let you know that the quilt top should be finished this week and in the mail to Meghan next week. Hopefully we won't have any more snow days :-)
I'll post pictures before I pack it.

If you read yesterday's post you saw the picture of Sabine's quilt top in the almost done stage; now you get to see the finished top! Thank you again to all the ladies who helped out by making blocks, to Z&S Fabrics for donating the backing fabric, batting, and binding, and a big thank you to Meghan for organizing a quilting bee at the Z&S Fabric shop to quilt both quilts! Thank you all! It warms my heart to know that these little girls will have something to cuddle in when they miss their Daddy's arms around them. Big hugs to you all from me!

Sabine's Quilt Top: Almost Done!!!

I've spent the evening piecing the blocks together for Sabine's pink quilt! With Meghan's suggestion we're going with a white, 1 inch border to frame your blocks and then I'll add a pink border! I haven't chosen the fabric for the border yet so that will be my next post! So far the quilt top is measuring about 39 by 52 1/2 inches! Great for cuddling! Thank you ladies for being a part of this project! I can't wait to see them both finished!

I just finished the book/album that will hold photos of each of your blocks, as well as the notes you sent along if you chose to do so. If you would still like to send a note along you are more than welcome to email us with it or there's still time to mail one; just drop us an email and let us know! Patricia and I are starting to sew the blocks together! We'll update as mush as we can!

We were short a block for Sabine's quilt so Jerrett (my son) created his own with a little help from me of course. He drew what he wanted, picked the fabrics, and I took creative license and reproduced his drawing. You know he's my kid when his drawing is very similar to the Flea Market Fancy quilt pattern!

We're done! I believe we have received all the blocks that we're going to get! We're ready to begin piecing them together! We've decided to use white to frame out your blocks then use a pink or yellow border. That way your blocks will be highlighted (thanks Meghan for the tip!). Here are 2 that I received today!

Final Deadline

Hello Ladies! We're getting down to the wire here for receiving blocks (today is technically the deadline). Hopefully, if you have not mailed your blocks, you've contacted us to let us know what's going on. If we don't hear from the one's who haven't sent blocks by Monday we will ask our "back up" ladies to provide blocks. We feel this is only fair since we'd like to get these blocks pieced together as soon as possible so Meghan can do her thing.

I've noticed that a few haven't sent notes along with their blocks...it's ok if you didn't want to! If you just forgot and would like to include one you are more than welcome to email us with it and I will print it out. I promise I won't read it, I know these are a personal thing! The plan is to have the album contain envelopes with the notes inside and a picture of your block.

Tanaya's block arrived this morning via the not-so-hunky UPS guy in shorts no less! (it's cold here!) The block is fantastic! I love the fabric she used!

Edited to Add: Tanaya said it was ok to share the reason behind her fabric choices...For my quilt square, I chose these fabrics because I was inspired by this quote from Mother Teresa:

"See how nature-trees, flowers, grass-grows in silence; see the stars and the moon and the sun, how they move in silence...we need silence to be able to touch souls."

That's so touching! I'm in tears!

Jennifer doesn't have a blog but she shared a picture of her block for Penelope's quilt. What I love his that her daughter helped her pick out the fabric! Gorgeous block! Thanks Jennifer! Here's a little bit of what she wrote in her email:

"The fabrics are the new Heather Ross Lightning Bugs, with one strip of Road Trip. The yellow on the two borders is from a 4 yard piece of vintage fabric I found in a thrift store for $1.38! I love it, but have no idea where it comes from. This is for Penelope’s quilt, and my Penelope helped to pick out the fabrics (which is why there is a little more pink that I would have had normally- she LOVES pink. Although I was to do a yellow block, it was important to me to have my Penny have input- she knows it is going for another Penelope and so she picked the things she thought all Penny’s would like, namely, pink dots and stripes!)

Hello ladies! I hope everyone is doing well and the blocks are in the mail (or almost!). Remember the deadline is the 19th!

We received an email from one of the gal's about including your name, email address, etc. in your note. Her concern was that Kati would feel the need to respond to all of us with an email or a "thank you" and she suggested that we might include something in the album "that states we are providing the artist contacts as informational only - and there is no expectation of a response from the family made to individual artists, or the group as a whole?". My thoughts exactly! My mother lost her husband of only 18 days back in July and she had many people around her for support for a few weeks and then everyone had to get back to their own lives...I think these notes will let Kati and her family know that there are still many people thinking of her. We're not expecting Kati to do anything but cuddle up with Sabine and Penelope and talk about their Daddy. If you're not comfortable adding your email address or blog/site then that's ok!

Apparently someone, who remains anonymous, didn't like my post about block size! If you are leaving a comment I ask that you keep them "light" and not belittle me or others. I merely made a suggestion and I know full well that I am not a quilter...thank you very much! Clarification: block size

Hello again! There seems to be a little miscommunication about final block size. Patricia and I are wanting the final size of your block to be 12 inches (11 1/2" plus 1/4 seam allowance). If you've already created a block that's 12 1/2" maybe you can salvage it by cutting it off a bit?? or if it's too small then maybe adding a strip to the side?? Sorry for the confusion!

Hello ladies!! If you haven't read Patricia's previous post please scroll down to the one under this post....I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and a happy New Year!

If you are creating a square for Sabine's pink quilt you should have just received an email from me with some general information and my mailing address. If you did not receive one from me, and you're making a pink square, please email me so that I have a correct email address. Patricia will (or has) sent out her own email to those who are making squares for Penelope's yellow quilt. Lori we still need an email address from you; please email us ASAP!

Please remember that we're also asking you to send a little note along with your square. My intentions are to create a little album for the girls. If you could include your blog/site address (if you have one), your email, name and the state you live in that would be great! My goal is to create a page for each person that contains a picture of the square along with your info. and your note. Don't worry I won't read the notes! The notes don't have to be much...and you don't have to include one if you don't feel like it.

Thank you again for contributing to these quilts! We're hoping that they will bring a little comfort to the little ones!

Remember squares are due by the 19th of this month but we'll give you until the 25th at the latest!

As of now we are happy to say that all openings to make squares have been filled! There's a chance that one spot still may be open so we'll let you know if it open's up! Thank you all again!

Almost filled!

Hello ladies! Just a quick update! We're very close to ending the sign-ups! We have 1, possibly 2, spots still open! Exciting isn't it? Well it gets better!! We had very generous offer from Meghan, who owns Z and S Fabrics, to donate the backing and her quilting services for both quilts! How wonderful is that? Meghan didn't ask for us to promote her site but I have to tell ya, she has a wide variety of good quality fabrics and I just spent $100 in her online shop! Her prices are amazing! I know I'll be back for more!

Ok ladies!! We're almost full! We have 7, possibly 9 (2 ladies are still deciding), openings for making the quilt blocks!! Exciting!! We still also need 2 lovely ladies to do the quilting! I know it's a big project to take on but just think of the cause and maybe we'll send a little goodie your way for the trouble! If needed, Patricia and I will attempt the quilting... After we get everyone assigned a block we'll send out a general email with the address you send to!

Update!

So far it's been a little slow in the participation department! With Patricia and I we have 6 other fabulous ladies (see sidebar under contributors!) who have already agreed to make a quilt block! We need more people! Go to this post to read the guidelines!

Can't sew? No problem! Use some iron-on fusible web! Get the kiddos involved with some fabric markers! It's a great way to teach them about caring and loving others! A few ladies have said "well, I'm not a quilter"; so what! I'm not a quilter either! I don't even know how to use my quilting foot on my machine but that's not stopping me!

Your block can be pieced, fusible webbed, glued (I'll sew it on it you need me to!), drawn with washable fabric markers...it doesn't matter your skill level!

Remember quilt blocks are due by the 19th of January! Loads of time to make one little square! I bet it could take less than 30 minutes to create!

Thank you to the ladies who have already agreed to help! We'll be getting the mailing addresses to you as soon as possible!

Preparing!

I've chosen my fabrics! Now I just need to figure out how I'll make a block! I thought maybe a picture of what I'm using might help spark some fabric inspiration! The "quarter flats" are all from Jo-Ann's as well as the solid; the striped I picked up at the local quilt shop. I'm not sure how I'm going to use these all together though! So far I'm thinking a little on the Denyse Schmidt here, here, and here. Now the fun part! Putting it all in one little square!

Colors!

Instead of choosing a fabric Patricia's decided to make it easier on you all! The color choices are as follows:

7 month old Sabine's quilt will be pink
4 year old Penelope's will be yellow!

Remember that Kati is a huge supporter of Indie craft so we think she'd appreciate funky, modern pieces!

Comfort quilts

Patricia, after seeing a quilt I made for my mother, came up with the idea for us crafty bloggers to come together to create a quilt for the daughters of Kati and James Kim. These quilts will be our way to express our condolences and for Kati and her daughters to know that as an art+craft community we're here for them. Here's where we need you help!

We're asking for 22 people to create one, 12x12 inch, quilt block that coordinates with a boarder/backing fabric that either Patricia or I will pick out (to be announced); the fabric chosen will more than likely be available at Jo-Ann's. The fabric we'll choose for the boarder/backing will be complimentary to each other; same pattern, different color so that it will be easy to match!
2 crib size quilts will be created! I will piece Sabine's quilt together and Patricia will piece Penelope's quilt. We'll let you know which lil' one's quilt block you will be creating so that you can send it to the proper person for piecing and so that you can coordinate with the color chosen.
Quilt blocks need to be in our little hands by January 19th so that we can begin the piecing!!
We need 2 lovely quilting goddesses (I'm buttering y'all up!) to quilt them for us; then send them back to us for binding!
We're also asking that if you'd like to send a short note along with your block to place it in an envelope with your name, email address, and blog site so that we can create a little album to be sent along with the quilts.

If you'd like to be one of the 24 people needed then please email Patricia and I at: quiltsforthekims@yahoo.com (sorry, but the link isn't working!). You will then receive an email from us letting you know if you are a part of the 24 (first come first serve!). Please specify in the email if you'd like to make a block or do the quilting! If you are not one of the first people to sign up we're encouraging you to gather with others to create and send a quilt of your own, whether it be to the Kim's or to a charity.

We'll update this blog regularly with any progress and we'll let you know a.s.a.p when we've chosen the fabric!

We've all been affected by the loss of James Kim. Let us come together to bring comfort and peace to his children and to let Kati know that she's not in this alone; that the art+craft community cares for them!
